What is Discussed in the Video Above
In the video, Dr. Wiederholz walks through every detail of the Discseel® journey—from your first consultation to post-procedure recovery. Below, you’ll find a breakdown of key topics covered in the video, including how the procedure works, who qualifies, what to expect on the day of your treatment, and guidelines for a successful recovery.
What Is the Discseel® Procedure?
The Discseel® procedure is a minimally invasive treatment for back and neck pain caused by damaged discs. Unlike spinal fusion or other traditional surgeries that permanently alter spinal structure, Discseel® repairs tears in the outer layer of the disc using a biologic fibrin sealant. This approach promotes natural healing, allowing the disc to strengthen over time without compromising flexibility.
Dr. Wiederholz: Leading Expert in Discseel®
•First Discseel® Trained Physician in Houston – Trained directly by Dr. Kevin Pauza, the procedure’s inventor, Dr. Wiederholz became the first certified Discseel® physician in Houston in 2020.
•Global Authority – As one of only two master instructors worldwide, Dr. Wiederholz is authorized to train other physicians in this specialized procedure.
•Exclusive Provider – The only certified Discseel® provider in Houston and one of the pioneers in New Jersey.
How Does Discseel® Work?
1. Disc Anatomy
Imagine the spinal disc as a jelly donut. Over time, cracks can form in its outer layer (the annulus fibrosis), allowing the inner gel to leak out, causing inflammation and pain.
2. Fibrin Sealant Injection
Discseel® seals these tears using a biologic fibrin sealant, which stops further leakage and initiates collagen regeneration, supporting the disc’s long-term repair.
3. Long-Term Healing
Unlike temporary fixes, Discseel® promotes the disc’s natural healing over time, reducing future pain flare-ups and preserving spinal mobility.
Who Is a Candidate for Discseel®?
Ideal Candidates:
•Individuals with chronic back or neck pain that hasn’t improved with other treatments.
•Patients diagnosed with degenerative disc disease or disc-related injuries.
Those Who May Not Be Candidates:
•Patients with disc infections requiring surgical or antibiotic treatment.
•Individuals with severe spinal fractures or disc ruptures needing surgical intervention.
Dr. Wiederholz will assess your candidacy during a detailed consultation, reviewing your symptoms and MRI results to ensure Discseel® is the best fit for you.
Consultation Process: What to Expect
•Virtual or In-Person Consultation – Your initial consultation includes an MRI review, either in person or virtually, to evaluate if Discseel® is suitable for your condition.
•Diagnostic Annulogram – Performed at the start of the procedure to identify any tears or leaks in the disc.
•Customized Treatment Plan – Based on your specific condition, Dr. Wiederholz will create a personalized plan to guide your recovery.
Day of the Procedure: What to Expect
•Preparation – Choose between local anesthesia or IV sedation; no general anesthesia is needed.
•Procedure Duration – Typically lasts 30–60 minutes, depending on the number of discs treated.
•Immediate Recovery – Patients rest for about 30 minutes post-procedure and can walk out the same day.
Post-Procedure Recovery
•Initial Pain Management – Expect increased discomfort during the first 2–4 weeks as your body adjusts. Pain is manageable with medication, rest, and physical therapy as needed.
•Activity Guidelines – Avoid bending, twisting, and high-impact activities like golf, tennis, and running for at least 3–6 months to protect the healing discs.
•Long-Term Healing – Improvement typically begins within 3–6 months, with complete recovery taking up to 12 months. Regular follow-ups with Dr. Wiederholz ensure progress and personalized care.
Discseel® vs. Traditional Surgery
•Less Invasive – Discseel® preserves spinal structure, unlike spinal fusion surgeries that require permanent implants.
•No Bridges Burned – Should further intervention be needed in the future, Discseel® doesn’t limit your options for additional treatment.
•Lower Risk – Studies involving hundreds of patients report no infections or nerve injuries, underscoring the safety of the procedure.
Preparing for Discseel®: Tips from Dr. Wiederholz
•Optimize Health – A diet rich in anti-inflammatory foods and adequate protein supports healing and tissue repair.
•Weight Management – Maintaining a healthy weight minimizes strain on the spine.
•Hormonal Health – Hormone optimization may enhance tissue repair and reduce inflammation, promoting a smoother recovery.
