Avoiding Injury Raking Leaves
This autumn ensure that you and your family stay injury free and avoid sprains or strains of your back, neck, shoulders, wrists, and knees from raking leaves by following these simple tips. Before you get started take the time to warm up your body by doing 10 minutes of light exercises. Select a rake that is the right size for you and put on a pair of gloves to avoid blisters. Wear good footwear that will reduce your chances of slipping to avoid any falls.
When raking leaves be sure to not twist your back and avoid pitching leaves over your shoulder or side. You can do this by using your legs to shift your body which will help avoid straining muscle in your back. When raking, vary your movements by switching hands and sides so you do an equal amount of work on both sides of your body. This will help you break up movement patterns which lead to repetitive motion injuries. Remember to bend at your knees when picking up things to also avoid hurting your back.
It is important to not overdue it and take brakes. When you are tired you are more susceptible to injuries. After you are finished take the time to stretch out your muscles. This will help to reduce tightness and soreness from all the “fun” you have just had.
